Meanwhile, more amenities can be found in the market town of Ulverston, 8.5 miles south, which is also home to the Laurel and Hardy Museum. Or, for more adventure, head for Grizedale Forest, 12 miles away, and its Tree Top Adventures, Segways and Go Ape high ropes course.

Inside, this modern apartment is open plan and inviting, with wooden flooring, cool neutral decor and industrial-style lighting, together with original shutters and panelling. Prepare romantic meals for two in the chic and contemporary kitchen area, which is equipped with an induction hob, fridge with ice compartment, combination oven, grill and microwave, washer/dryer, dishwasher and Nespresso machine. Dine at the beautifully lit table while admiring the ever-changing view towards Coniston Water through the French doors. With a wood burner, Freeview TV, DVD player and Bluetooth music system, the inviting lounge area offers plenty of entertainment for nights in. The elegant bedroom boasts a striking four-poster king-size bed and indulgent free-standing bath, and opens onto the patio. A stylish shower room completes the accommodation.

Step outside through the French doors onto the delightful private patio, which offers fell-top views and glimpses of Coniston Water. Beautiful cottage that is done up to a high standard. Loved that it was slightly out of the way of everything, but still easily accessible by car. We would definitely stay here again, wasnt ready to come home.

Whitstable is one of Kent’s most popular seaside towns, not only for its long shingle beaches, dotted with colourful huts and houses, but also for its annual Oyster Festival, when the town really comes alive. Here you can sample this renowned delicacy which has been collected in the area since Roman times and brings visitors from all over the globe to get a glimpse of the first catch of the season. Still a working harbour, you can sample a plethora of seafood from the stalls and restaurants as you watch the fishing boats return from sea, or pop up to the bohemian main street with its quirky colourful shops and galleries. Keep to the seaside theme and hire bikes to ride along the coast to Herne Bay just two miles away, or try the famous inland Crab and Winkle Way, which follows the old railway line between Whitstable and Canterbury and is packed with history and nostalgia. Relax with lazy days at the beach, building sandcastles and exploring hidden rock pools or take a long walk along the vast stretch of shingle beach. The area has lots of other beach walks, as well many country and woodland trails nearby, perfect for both you and the family dog! For a little culture, pay a visit to the town’s famous 18th century Castle and Gardens, Playhouse Theatre and Whitstable Museum and Gallery, all perfect for an afternoon or evening out. Only eight miles north of the cathedral city of Canterbury with its popular glass-fronted Marlowe Theatre, you are also just half an hour away from the up-and-coming seaside town of Margate and 45 minutes away from the port of Dover with its famous white cliffs. Slightly further afield, you will find the historic Cinque Ports towns of amongst others, Rye, Hastings and Tenterden where you will find a variety of spectacular monuments and beautiful castles to visit with all the family. Whitstable really is the perfect place for those who want to get back to how holidays used to be – full of fun, adventure and family.
